The APRA Standards of Practice provide guidelines for the Association of Professional Reserve Analysts and define certain terms relating to Reserve Studies. It is the intention of these Standards to be viewed as a minimum standard and not as a limitation on the opinion, recommendations, or practice of the individual Reserve Analyst.

We’re excited to share that the APRA Standards of Practice, last adopted in 2012, have been fully updated!

Over the past year, a dedicated committee of APRA members worked together to review and modernize the Standards to reflect today’s best practices and evolving methodologies. The result is a cleaner, better-organized document that supports consistency and clarity across the profession.

Here are a few highlights of what’s new:

• Introduction of the new Adequacy Framework. This approach defines long-term funding sufficiency through a balance of principles, constraints, goals, and risks
• Updated definitions for Reserve Fund Status, Starting Balance, and Extended Useful Life
• Clearer guidance for Physical and Financial Analyses
• New terms such as Contribution Percentage, Change Rate, Prepared-For-Year, Prepared-In-Year, and Pre-Completion Study

These updated Standards of Practice strengthen the APRA community by promoting cohesion and consistency among practitioners. Through greater standardization and clarity, they enhance the reliability of outcomes and provide members with the security and support of a unified, modern framework that advances the profession with confidence and integrity.
